Fire Extinguisher Pressure Test & Refill FAQs

What is a fire extinguisher pressure test & refill?

A pressure test and refill ensures your fire extinguisher is still safe, compliant, and ready to use. The extinguisher is tested under pressure to check for leaks or weaknesses, then refilled and returned for continued use.

As part of the NZ Standard 4503, a pressure test is required every five years.

  1. Your extinguisher is collected from your premises.
  2. It is taken to an accredited testing provider.
  3. The extinguisher is pressure tested, refilled, and certified.
  4. It is dropped back to you, ready for use.

The typical turnaround time is one week from collection to return.

Yes. Any extinguisher under 2.5kg is not economical to test and refill. In these cases, replacement is recommended instead.

This service is designed for businesses with more than three extinguishers. The process becomes more cost-effective when multiple extinguishers are serviced at once.

Over time, extinguishers may lose pressure, corrode, or develop faults. Pressure testing ensures they meet the NZ Safety Standard 4503 and will operate correctly in an emergency.

In accordance with the NZ Standard 4503, extinguishers require pressure testing and refilling every 5 years, and a service and maintenance check annually.

If an extinguisher fails its pressure test, it cannot be refilled. In this case, you will be advised to replace it with a compliant new unit.

Yes. Collection and return are included in the process for convenience.

You can book by contacting our service team.

A site visit will be scheduled, and you’ll be advised on costs based on the number and type of extinguishers, and whether they require an annual service and maintenance check or a pressure test.

In addition, we will schedule an annual cycle, record the number of extinguishers onsite and locations, their age, including recording vehicle extinguishers and registrations.

All of our extinguishers meet all of the NZ Standard requirements.
